POW 2024
Power Of Women 2024
The Nellie McLung Junior High Program hosted its annual Power of Women (POW) event on January 25th and 26th, 2024. This year’s event had students from a variety of schools around Edmonton engage in a morning of inspiring keynote speakers and with a Pink Tea* on Thursday afternoon and a Career Fair on Friday afternoon. This event is planned by our Grade 9 Nellie McClung students under the leadership of their Grade 9 home teacher. POW centers on strengthening bonds between girls and women through friendship, support, and mentorship. It is important for girls to see and learn about successful, inspiring women, who are leaders in their community!
The POW event was started back in 2018 by Mrs. Severson and it has become a highlight event for our students to showcase their creativity and leadership skills. This year’s event had over 200 students participating over the two days and the feedback was amazing.
* What is a Pink Tea?
A Pink Tea embodies the spirit of camaraderie, dialogue, and empowerment among women engaging in political discourse. Coming together for pink tea serves as a catalyst for meaningful conversations, fostering understanding, empathy, and solidarity among participants as they explore diverse perspectives and advocate for positive change in society. Students enjoyed some pink lemonade and conversation with talking points, sharing ideas and wonders from the perspective of those who identify as female.
