Graduation 2020

Patricia Bullock

Graduation 2020 is complete! Nothing in 2020 has been what any of us imagined I am sure, and graduation celebrations everywhere have taken on various different looks. For the students at Nellie graduation took the form of a google meet. Separate, but together. Just like they all have been every day since schools closed in this province.

This year’s highlights included a reminder of days gone by when the students gathered to perform following their week of Dance Ed as well as a montage of pictures of each of the graduates. Like an in person ceremony, the girls led the way with their amazing emcee skills full of timely jokes and thoughtful reminders of memories made and shared among the class.

Each of the Nellie’s graduating this year from the Avonmore and Oliver campuses will head off on a new path. A new school awaits them, their time at Nellie is over. But, the saying, ‘once a Nellie, always a Nellie’ still holds true. I am sure they will return to visit and volunteer like so many other alumni do. And they will continue the proud legacy of the Nellie program with their hard work and bright futures.

Congratulations graduates!

Choosing a high school

Patricia Bullock

Choosing a high school is exciting. It can also be a little overwhelming at times. Each graduating class of women at Nellie go through this process and their choices often take them to schools all over the city and surrounding areas. There are many factors to consider when deciding which high school is right for you.

Geography is a common factor for most students choosing a high school, however, many Nellies have made the decision to travel to the Oliver and Avonmore campuses because of the unique programing offered in the Nellie program. Making the commitment to travel for three years of junior high develops independence and leadership in our students and often geography is managed very well. Their experience of navigating their commutes to and from school with public transit ensures they are well prepared to navigate commutes to their chosen high school.

Students’ strengths and interests play an important role in determining high school choice. Within Edmonton we are afforded many different options in both public and separate school divisions. From sports academies to performing arts and countless language options, students are fortunate to have the ability to make a choice best suited to their needs. Throughout the district there are options for both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programing if academics are a focus. There are great choices, based on which of the programs you believe would suit you best.

On paper, a school might be just what you are looking for, but when you walk in, it just doesn’t feel right. Atmosphere is important. Atmosphere was a factor when you chose Nellie for junior high programing. Atmosphere will be a driving force in their high school decision as well. Some students may look for smaller class sizes with a more intimate feel while others may be drawn to a school with an abundance of school spirit and comradery. Each school has its own feeling and it is important that students find a school that they feel welcomed and included.

Researching your options is very important. Talk with friends, family and neighbours. Visit school websites and set up virtual meetings with school staff. Choosing a high school is so exciting. There are many things that will factor into your choice, but oh, the places you will go!

On March 5th, 2020, a group of students from the Nellie McClung Jr. High girls’ program assisted and participated in the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce’s Inspiring Women in Business luncheon, presented by CPA Alberta. The Nellie students, representing grades eight and nine, arrived prior to the event to help prepare and place all of the swag bags given to attendees. When the doors opened, the Nellie students welcomed attendees as they made their way into the ballroom.

The Inspiring Women in Business luncheon, held at the Sutton Place Hotel in the week preceding International Women’s day on March 8th, was attended by over 200 people. The event featured a panel of local women who excel in their respective businesses, including: Karen Brookman, President & CEO, West Canadian Digital Imaging; Laura Didyk, National Lead, Women Entrepreneurs, BDC; and Jacqueline Jacek, Owner, Jacek Chocolate Couture. With over 70 years business expertise combined, the panel overwhelmingly inspired all in attendance. Only time will tell, but maybe in the future Nellie alumnae will be sharing their knowledge to inspire others!
